"Software Only GPS"

So what's the idea?

Navizon allow you to get your positioning information thanks to Wi-Fi and Cell Tower signals.  In order to know the exact location of each Wi-Fi access points and cell towers, they need to be mapped thanks to a GPS device.
Navizon's users with GPS device are helping us in mapping the wireless landscape. Which means that  they collect data that can be shared with other Navizon users.

That's how the network works!

Mapping the Wireless Landscape

-  FREE -

REQUIREMENTS -- an active GPS receiver, a Wi-Fi and/or Cellular enabled Pocket PC or a Smartphone.

If you already have a GPS device, you can use Navizon for free and enjoy the following benefits:

- Wi-Fi and Cell tower positioning when a GPS fix is not available
- A positioning system that works even when GPS doesn't: indoors, in urban canyons...
- useful features such as the Local search, the Buddy tracker, and Geotags!
- Last but not least, you can earn rewards by mapping Wi-Fi and Cell Tower.

When you use Navizon with a GPS device, you will collect information on nearby Wi-Fi access points and Cell Towers
Once you sync your Data, you earn points according to the following rule:

 - 15 points for each cellular tower
 - 3 points for each Wi-Fi access point
if they are discovered by you (or in other words if you are the first one to map them)

- 1 point for each Wi-Fi access point
 - 2 points for each cellular tower
if they have already been mapped by someone else

Once you have 10,000 points, you can redeem them in a reward, and a $19.99 will be wired to your Paypal account.

No GPS Required

-Free to try, $24.99 to buy -

REQUIREMENTS - a Wi-Fi or Cellular enabled Pocket PC (GPS optional).

Navizon Premium seamlessly and transparently uses Wi-Fi and cellular signal to simulate a virtual GPS on your device. Just hit "Start" and your navigating in the real world without a GPS (Software Only GPS!).

If you don't have a GPS, you can use Navizon as a software-only GPS and benefit from all these cool features:

-  Know your position with Wi-Fi and/Or Cell positioning
-  Find stuff around you thanks to the local search
-  Find your friends or loved ones with the Buddy Tracker
-  Tag places and read comments of others with the Geotags
-  Connect Navizon to a navigation system such as TomTom, MS street & trips, Copilot or Mapopolis.

All of this for a one-time license of $24.99!!!

NOTE: For Navizon Wi-Fi and Cellular Positioning your Pocket Serial Port must be set to NO GPS.

In order for Navizon premium to Work without a GPS, your area needs to be covered by the Navizon data base.
Once you hit "Start", you should see the Phone light or the Wi-Fi light blinking . This means that Navizon has found your position thanks to the Wi-Fi and cellular positioning.
If no lights are blinking it most likely means that no one has mapped your area yet or that you are standing in a place where no Wi-Fi or cell towers are visible.
You can check the coverage in your area by creating a user profile and hitting "my coverage" in the user section of the site. If you're still not sure if it works, you can always try it for free for 15 days.

With Navizon you can search for the closest pizza joint, computer store or pretty much anything. Just hit the local search tab and type the keyword of your choice.

In order for this feature to work, you will need an active Internet connection on your Pocket PC (Wi-Fi or GPRS) and to have positioning data where you are located. If you are in an area covered by our database, you won't need a GPS device but if you are a big traveler a GPS device might come handy to always be able to find your way with Navizon.

You can see an illustration of the local search feature in this video.

With Navizon, you can create notes that will be attached to a specific location (also known as Geotags). Those notes that are shared with the rest of the community will pop up on the device of other users when they enter the vicinity of the geotag.

So let's say for example you're in a restaurant. You really like it or really hate it. You post a note using Navizon's Geotags. Then everyone else that will pass by this restaurant will see this note pop up on his device (as long as he has the same interests than you).

Creating Geotags

There are two ways you can create geotags:

- directly from Navizon: just click on new tag, enter what you have to say in the comment area and tag it with the appropriate tags

- from the web interface: go in the "Tag" section of the user area. Double click on a place on the map and just fill out the information. From the web interface, you can also edit or delete your own geotags.

How are Geotags structured?

The main information (what you have to say) should be in the comment area. Then you can tag it with the appropriate tags so that it can get a higher rank for people who have the same interest than you. You can also add a URL if there's a web page related to the subject.

So for the restaurant example, you could have in the comment "Tony's Italian restaurant - the best pasta I had in a very long time" and tag it with "italian dining pasta".

Another example: let's say you see a speed radar on the highway, you could have in the comment "Speed radar here. Slow down!" and tag it with "speed radar driving".

The sensitivity bar

On Navizon you can also define the radius of the geotags you want to search around you. So let's say you are driving on a highway and you want to be notified if you're entering the vicinity of a speed radar in order to slow down, you should set the sensitivity to 5 or 10 km. If you are a pedestrian and you are looking for what users had to say about places that are in your neighborhood, then you might want to set the sensitivity to 1 mile.

The notification button

You can decide how you want to be notified when you enter the vicinity of geotags create by others. You can have it pop up on the device (cool if you're using it for the speed camera example) by selecting "Pop up", or have it simply displayed in the tag tab of Navizon by selecting "Quiet". You can also have it disabled all together by selecting "Disabled".

With Navizon, you can create groups and display the current location of the members of this group.

Whether you want to make sure your daughter gets to school safely or see where you friends are gathering so that you can join them, the Buddy Tracker will be the ideal companion.

If you are using Navizon with a GPS, you will be able to share your location with your group members' wherever you go. If you don't have a GPS and are using Navizon in Wi-Fi/cellular positioning mode, this feature will work in the areas already covered (see "My coverage" in the user section).

No Big Brother here

With Navizon's buddy tracker, only users that are member of your groups can see your location. So you can only be located by the people you want.

And if you don't want anyone to know where you are, you can even turn it off altogether by unchecking "Automatically submit location"
